Heatwrapping a manifold

  1. #1
how are people heatwrapping there exhausts? Do the majority just wrap it straight on or do people tend to paint it with flameproof paint first?
going to be doing it in the next week and just wanted to get a rough idea if its worth painting it or not first, cheers guys

Most just heatwrap onto bare metal and secure with metal cable ties.

well thats what i was gonna do but looking into it a bit more plenty of people (mostly americans) were painting the thing first, didnt know if it was some kind of extra safety precaution..

I wouldnt waste my money or time tbh.

no noticable advantage on power -but does keep temps down in engine bay .
you need to remove manifold to do it right and pull like bugerry on wrap to get it tight
a bit of an art to make it look right and cheap e-bay wrapping is usually crap
you 50ft to do it right

yeah im gonna take it off and give it a pull it really hard (pardon the obvious penis joke) to make sure its on right and gonna soak it in water first so that when it dries it'll be even tighter. i know it wont make any power differences but the cars in somewhat of a sorry state at the min and im going to turn it into a decent spec car and just want to get as much done as possible really

What manifold have you got? Personally I would only fit heat wrap if you have a heat problem as wrap will restrict the metals natural expansion and contraction as it heats and cools. This can lead to the manifold cracking. If its not stainless then wrap can trap moisture and the manifold can rust prematurely. Otherwise its great stuff lol

its a 4-2-1 stainless manifold, the info you gave is good to know for future reference i just assumed the moisture would evaporate after giving it a good run.

It will be unfortunatley some heat wrap is made from material which when wet =hot has a chemical corrosive effect on things and if it is a cheap s/s maniofld the it will correode
does it look nice and shiny or dull and brown --if so its a cheap chineese manifold which is not best quality s/s -which is why it is not still shiny

Here's a pic of it, cheap chinese?

    cheap quality s/s at least

ah, well ill wrap it and then if it corrodes away ill replace with a good branded hight quality s/s one, thanks for the input its appreciated
