No cambelt cover

  1. #1
I got my new engine today and it has no cambelt covers on whatsoever so I'm wondering if this was ok to run? I get if I had the bottom half on but top half off and a stone went in it could rip the belt but if it was all off it would just deflect the stone wouldn't it?
    Any ideas?

Fuck that, get the covers on, for peace of mind at least, a stone or anything could fly upwards to the cams or downwards to the crank and shred that belt in seconds.

As above it's not worth the risk.

It'll just bounce off though won't it? Was thinking it needed though, just wondering without wouldn't be told bad would it? Might have to get all the belt off to put the cover on soon then!

True true! I think I'll fit the covers but cut 2 holes so the pulleys can be seen

Just creating more of a risk modding it making it stand out is one thing but if anything gets in it your asking for trouble. I would eb rather safe than sorry just for a cover and can pull up bonnet with them showing off etc. Fair enough if a car show day but for general use no ones going to see them.

Or if you want to go OTT then go grab some custom cam-belt covers and get see though

Plenty have ran without and been 'ok' but lets face it. Its on for a reason. It only takes the once and boom.

    I don't run a cover, never had a problem.

I wouldn't risk my engine just for a few pennies worth of plastic.

I wouldnt run without them considering how long it takes to fit a set and the job they do

I ran for years without and never had a problem (with quite an expensive engine build). But didn't see that many miles. They're not just there to protect from stones but also buildup of crud in and around the bearings and seals too. The more miles you do the bigger "risk" obviously. Doing rally stages? Sure - fit them. Hillclimbs (dave ) - don't bother.
