Rocker cover breather or Oil catch tank??

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Im new to this forum and Saxos in general, there has been some great advice on here and has helped alot.

Anyway I have gathered that using an oil catch tank is better than a filter, is it easy to fit an oil catch tank? Is it a simple set up? Even for a newbie like me.

Had my Saxo 6 weeks, had a proper look at it today and noticed rocker cover breather hose isnt connected to anything! So need to get it sorted ASAP i would guess.

    Cheers

It should connect to the original airbox on a MK2 vtr. I assume you have a induction kit fitted?

Nah, when I bought it, there was only a cone filter connected to the throttle body and the rocker breather was/is disconnected. I ordered an induction kit which should be with me tomorrow. (I now know I probably should have ordered the original system) On the kit Ive ordered it comes with a rocker breather because it doesnt have a connection on the actual system.

So is oil tank easy to fit?

Cheers Daniel, I see youve replied to a few of my threads, appreciated mate.

I'd just fit the usual breather filter mate, especially if one comes with your induction kit.

An oil catch tank is easy to fit, buy one, run a hose to it from the rocker cover and mount is somewhere.

Nice one, think I'll stick with the rocker cover filter for now and so it stops leaking and covering my engine in shit. I'll look into an oil tank later on, gonna start with the bodywork first.

    Cheers again mate

Oil catch tanks are straight forward just need to find a place in the engine bay to mount. I was going to get a catch tank but I just fitted a small breather filter instead.

Yeah nobody seems to 100% agree with between breather filter or oil catcher, people seem to lean towards oil cathers.

Is that your car? Where is the front of your cold air intake going to? Whats the material? Sorry about the questions.

Also am I right in thinking I need a 19mm breather filter to fit?

    Cheers

yes its mine, the pipe goes towards my morette headlights. Don't need the centre bulb on them so I turned it into the intake. Heres a pick from the outside

The piping itself I got from auto silicone hoses on ebay link

Pretty sure the piece of pipe going to the breather filter is 19mm. Can't remember the filter itself.

Nice engine bay Jack, am I right in thinking there was no real gain in performance with the CDA filter?

Also, can you explain to me how you wired up the twin fans?

    Cheers.

    Cheers for that, good idea.

I could get a 16mm filter for the pipe and tighten it up with a jubilee clip if its loose, I suppose?

Thanks pal. Haven't felt any gains really maybe 1-2 bhp can't really get any gains with a 8v engine.

Can't really remember how I did the fans think it was as simple as splicing the 2nd fan wires with the 1st fan so they both come on at the same time.

Also what size are the silicone hoses?

    Cheers pal

the one that goes to the throttle body is 60mm. The elbow is a 60-80mm to fit on the BMC. The pipe at the front to the morette is also 80mm

So wiring up the fan sounds pretty simple then, thanks
I reckon the standard airbox with panel filter and resonator removed and blanked off is probably the best intake set-up for not a lot of money, but the CDA kit you have looks great!

Do I need to buy a new hose for the breather filter like the blue one you have? Or will it connect to the original one, the one with ripples in it?

    Thanks

Just looked back on my progress thread. All I did is pair the positive and negatives from the 2nd hand to the 1st one and it works no problems.

It might be alright with what you have but it might snap due to being worn out and brittle.

How I have mine is the small silicone elbow over the plastic plug that goes into the rocker cover. Then I pushed the elbow into the hole in the back of the filter. Been like that for a few months its pretty secure.

Ok thanks, youre really helping me alot here.

So I can cut the original breather and attach the filter? Which is proabaly 19mm? Then I get a breather slightly bigger and tighten it up?

    Cheers fellas!

Just looked under the bonnet to see the measurements.
What I've done is kept the hard plastic elbow that clips onto the rocker cover. The original tube that goes onto that and into the original airbox (the rippled one) I've cut off completely. Did this because it was brittle and the socket/ plug thing on the end of it wouldn't fit with the filter.

The silicone elbow I put on is 19mm. All I've done is pushed it over the plastic elbow that goes into the rocker cover. Its plenty tight enough so it doesn't need a clip to fasten it in place.

The small breather filter I have is 18mm. I've just pushed the silicone elbow into the back of it. Again its plenty right enough to not need any clips.

Jack mate you are a diamond, its f***ing freezing out there! You've sorted this right out for me though. I'm probably gonna have a few more questions this week, dont mind me asking you? When I do.
