Coolant temp

    Just a quick one,
My vtr will get up to temperature fine and hits the middle of the gauge when stood still.
When travelling at 60-70 it sits noticeably lower!
I'd just like to know if this is a trait of the vtr or if it seems like my thermostat is buggered!
    Thanks

Are you getting hot air through the vents?also it might just be the sensor itself that's faulty.

Yes the fans blow nice and hot.
Radiator fan kicks in and out when stationary.
where would the sensor be located in the system?
    Thanks

I've just had a look at Google images, I can see it is mounted right next to the thermostat.

Mine constantly hovers between 1/4 and just below half needle slower goes up n down has down for months no problems only worry if it goes too high or heaters blow cold

    As above.

also, in the handbook ANYWHERE between 0 and the red line is "normal" lol

Ok thanks. I've come from a VW GOLF where it doesn't budge off of the 90*C point.

When you're going at 70mph at this time of the year there's a lot of cold air (I assume you live in UK) hitting the radiator so you will get a bit of overcooling to make the needle fall a bit.

easy way to check is on warm up feel the top hose from the rad, if its stays reasonably cold and then when the car gets warmer you get a rush of heat through it that generally means the thermostat is working.
Bit more of a simple method that removing it as you'll need to bleed the system

    good idea, thanks

Gauges in golfs are heavily damped and more accurate. They're digital.

gauges in a Saxo are analogue, they'll never be as accurate.

    there's nothing wrong with it.

mrtin is correct--i,m guessing fan comes on as it gets towards 3/4 of guage then drops --thats fine

yes it could be thernosat is opening stightly too soon --so change it -running hotter -within sensible limits will be more efficent anyway

My gauge cruising at 60 fluctuates between just under half and half way. Fan comes in at just about 3/4 when idling in traffic. Only to be expected when there's no air flow over the radiator.

I totally understand the thermostat thing, makes sense really

that's normal. Mine would be around 1/3 when driving, and go towards half when stuck in traffic i summer time, very rarely in winter. Anything slightly above half and the fan would kick in and bring it just below half again.
