Phase 1 Magenta VTS what to do?

  1. #1
Ive had a few saxo's and 106's about 13 i think of the top of my head, and previously owned a caged magenta red vtr at 20 that had been set up for track on L plates the car was awesome and the colour gorgeous, not knowing how rare it was i sold it shortly after passing my test thinking id not be able to insure it, moved on to a broken audi a4, matey crashed the car and it ended up in the scrappy.
A few weeks back i found this one on ebay and couldnt believe my eyes i had to have it, after it dissapearing off of ebay, me finding it on gumtree and 8 hours of driving its home with me and im making a start on it and enjoying every bit of it 6 years later.

But what to do, track build, oem build but lower or stance it a little for shows etc ?

Day after i picked it up i did the discs and pads all round as they were shot, looks like its had recent rear calipers everything went nice and easily gave the calipers a lick of paint while i was there and cleaned out all the arches made a big difference!

Once it was done out for a blast and some photo's most of mine have been lowered in the past , it was alot of fun but my god is it scary around corners its not quite as clean as it is in pictures the bonnet a pillars wings are chipped and the roof needs repainting due to laquer peel but for a 21 year old shes doing alright!

Couple of weeks have been by and i cleaned up the engine bay as much as i can for now, if anyones good with removing alarm wiring let me know , the sounder isnt there , its just got standard remote locking but im far too scared it wont run again to be pulling wires out as im no good with that stuff! Its looking better definitely.

Next up was the anti roll bar bushes , mine were knackered , cheap and easy fix only £21 from strong flex uk , feels alot less wobbly on a roundabout now but will still need alot more work.

  9. #9
Cheers mate it needs some tidying up and paint but its a good base project, i had a blue and silver vtr many moons ago bud but dont think i posted it on here.

Nothing major but given the front wiper arms a lick of paint changed the blades to aero and dewipered the rear also fixed the half hanging brake light/rattle with a jag numberplate clip strangely enough much better less annoying!

Hi mate. That's one mint-looking specimen.
I've seen a couple photos of a red mk2 vts, colour coded bodykit parts, and gloss white indianapolis rims. I this it was magenta also.
These photos can be found there: http://alex.insaniak.com/saxonetwork/suki.php
It looks amazing in my opinion. Especially the rims. Not sure about color coding, but I like it both ways.
Painting the lower, concave part of the rear bumper black is a nice visual mod on saxos of a few colours aswell, red included. Color coding would be more invasive, and this one could be done with some kind of a peelable paint.
Other than that I would just lower it very slightly and maybe put a nice, just a tiny bit louder exhaust.
Even if you don't do anything to it, magenta red is one sexy colour for a saxo.
  14. #14
Cheers mate , i am very tempted to get it all colour coded as it does need the roof sprating along with bonnet and wings from chips etc, cant say ive seen a colour coded one in this colour so would be nice but then i also like the standard outside look so we shall see! The exhaust is non standard and it has a decat but still has centre box so its just right! Will lower it probably 60mm with different wheels and a vts spoiler i think

  15. #15
I am the biggest proponent of putting white rims on saxos. Even white steels look great on them
How much does a refurbished VTS beam cost over there? Will need one in some time too, they're around 1100 PLN/230 GBP/260 EUR here, but it's very hard to find one.
  16. #16
Aha cant say im a fan on white wheels unless the cars white , thats pretty cheap bud theyre about 300 quid here!

Very clean looking car, i think it would be a shame to turn it into a track car as its so tidy. I'd probably just get it mint and subtle mods. It's your car though so have fun with it, its funny cos from reading your thread i'm a similar age to you and also owned my VTR at 20 and am looking for another now to re-live the saxo days haha.
  19. #19
Polish up the cam covers,it's a rare colour keep it pretty standard.
  20. #20
Thanks guys, Its not going to be a full on track car im just doing things that i know the saxo particuarly suffers with like shit brakes shit height etc aha exactly that mate in my time ive had about 14 saxo's and 106's that now ive finally got a mk1 vts in the colour i wanted that im going to do the things i wanted to do when i was younger just never got round to it

  30. #30
As mentioned above, keep it immaculate and don’t do anything to it that can’t be reversed. Keep ahold of original parts.

These Mk1 VTS now are climbing in value ONLY if they are original. There are less than 5 left known in this colour!

Above all make sure you enjoy it

In fact. This was Isaac’s old VTS (checking back on the register that I kept) it was the best condition original Magenta VTS known to be left.

Of the other two, one was a really badly repaired CAT C, and the other was a Tour De Course which also has non original panels & engine which has been off the road for many years.

Busy busy at the weekend, im 26 now so the 3.5k revs at 70 on long journeys takes it toll on me now , soo ive fitted abit of sound deadning in places including the boot, abit was missing under the drivers side , its made things abit quieter which is nice! Gave everywhere a good hoover and clean, also stitched up the ripped rear seat looks alot tidier , last thing was to shampoo the carpet and clip it in properlly as it had got marks on it and come out of some of the grabber clips, looks spot on now just need some decent mats really

Is that a crack running on the boot floor from the left wheel arch? I only ask because I had one on the drivers side due to arch rust, all of which I have welded up.

Hi, did you peel back the carpet on the arch? Just that in the picture where the zig zag line looks like a crack, it also looks like it originates from a bulging section on the arch. This is exactly what mine was like, it started from where the reinforcement plate ends.

All good if you are happy that it's not a crack etc, just wanting to make sure you've checked thoroughly as it would really need fixed urgently if it's a crack (it would mean that the boot floor was flexing through lack of structural rigidity).

    Cheers
    Craig

Nice one, really pleased for you that all is well. It was certainly an unpleasant shock for me when I discovered my rot and was a fair bit of welding work to put right! Thankfully you don't have that issue. Just as well to check and be sure, as you have done.

    Onwards and upwards!
  55. #55
Yeh so am i i should of cleaned it up efore i put the silent dent down really, but was inpatient when its warmer again i want to be doing all underneath and this etc with a wire wheel etc taking it back to bare metal then painting and under sealing fingers crossed just too cold for that shit at the mo aha

When you get to that stage, for heavens sake don't put underseal on it or even waxoly to be honest, I can strongly recommend Bilthamber products. You get a clear wax (Dynax UC) that comes in big 750 ml aerosols, and also S50 cavity wax. The clear stuff is just that -you can still see through it, so you can preserve the appearance under there.

It also cleans really well, you just take a rag with soapy water to it and any grime and dirt comes straight off. It doesn't dry sticky either, just slightly tacky. The S50 is great for getting into box sections / chassis rails etc and comes with a 360 Degree directional long lance. So easy to apply and comes out tops in testing.

I've used it on my classic mini, I have used S50 in all the box sections and UC everywhere under the car, floors arches etc. Great stuff.

Quick test fit today see how the new wheels fit before i order tyres come payday , rear has a 20mm spacer and now sits lovely and flush, front is no spacer and sits pretty bang on too.

Should have custom braided lines on the way for the front brembos for christmas hopefully then just need to order a gti6 master cylinder and i can get cracking on sorting the brembos out and fitting them.

Started work on the brembo's today , man do these have some thick paint, what i originally thought was chips in the metal of the calipers was actually just chips in the mega thick paint which is handy, as theyre starting to look alot better now, lots of stuff left to do but getting there

Looking great. Just for further info, here's a couple of pics of my mini inner arches after using Dynax UC (Clear) wax. It goes on and dries great, leavin a slightly tacky surface. It comes up just as good again after washing dirt off, you can use a cloth / wash mit without any fear of damaging the wax.

It's also great for exposed threads / bolt heads etc. Keeps them from rusting.

Out of curiosity, your car looks about as lowered as mine and I see you have the front arch liners fitter. I have liners to fit but I wondered if you found the wheels rubbed them.

Paint stripped twice brembo's have some strong as shit paint , sanded , high temp prinered, then red oxide primered abd then colour, i ran out of colour today so ordered some more to do them again, then its brembo stickers and laquer.

  84. #84
Excellent calliper refurbishment work...top marks. What car are the callipers from and do you have to run a minimum of 15" rims to get the required clearance?
  85. #85
Cheers lads! I like the colour alot and thought it would look sort of oem+ rather than over the top if that makes sense aha, yeh do it man amazon green is wicked, company called clear coats on ebay mixes the paint for me and its a perfect match for 15 quid a can which isnt bad!

Theyre 406 3.0 v6 brembo's bud, you would have to have 15's and spacers if running high offset wheels like standard vts wheels. You also have to run a gti6 master cylinder and gti6 brake discs and custom braided lines from spoox motorsport all of which i have but yet to fit

I couldnt of been more wrong , so ever since ive had it on the odd occassion from cold i go to pull away and the car stutters alot until in 2nd gear then it clears...never really done anything about it as i dont use it often.

Went to use it the other day and the idle was pretty irratic it wanted to stall but didnt, i showed the lads on facebook and they advised me to replace the idle control valve which made sense, replaced it the idle seemed good but now everytime i get to a set of lights while slowing down it stalled i had to bump it to carry on going.

Soo another post and a few ideas later ive replaced coolant temp sensor, coilpack, map sensor and fuel filter also ....guess what it still does it the massive french turd

Soo im stuck now few people saying lambda sensor so thats next on the list, parts are cheap and at least i know alot of them are now new which is nice i guess.

Ive also done a coolant change as it looked horrendous and flushed it out as best as i could, which i found it has a nissens radiator bit of a bonus.

Then an oil change with a new filter as its been nearly a year.

Don't discount the throttle potentiometer. Mine went and it gave me erratic idle, occasional misfire when driving and just general poor running.

I have also had the lambda go (it was actually OK but there were wiring issues). This made the car splutter and die constantly, you couldn't save it unless you went full throttle (where lambda is ignored) or switched it off and on again. Still don't fully understand what was happening there, I think it's to do with mine having a JP4S swapped into it but running off the saxo ECU.

Throttle pot is the same as found on the VTR by the way.

cheers mate ive also ordered a fuel pump as i had a rallye converted to a 16v once and i remember it having same symptoms when i got rid of it , the next guy said he had issues with it cutting out all of a sudden, he changed the pump to a gti one and it fixed it, im gunna do the pump today hopefully, and if that doesn't work lambda and tps will be next , then all the sensors are pretty much brand new

nice mate , though I am liking saxos standard now , lowered a wee bit sets them off nicely though

Cheers bud i loved how it looked standard, just drive wise it was far to wobbly to what im used too had to be changed so started building the car i wanted when i was 20 or so now i can afford to do bits aha<br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

Sooo new sender with new fuel pump already built inside, and still the same problem, hey ho another new thing ticked off the list , trying a new crank sensor tomorrow<br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>
  115. #115
I'll be surprised if it turns out to be the crank sensor. when mine was misbehaving (lambda) it would get steadily worse, running rougher and rougher over a few seconds then splutter and die. I wondered about lambda so cut the wires to allow me to simulate intermittent loss of signal. I found that even the most minute loss of signal (I created very quick loss of signal by open circuiting one of the signal wires very rapidly and briefly) - the car would just die instantly when losing signal. My money is still on lambda or tps.

Tried a new throttle position sensor, new lambda sensor and a new crankshaft position sensor now bud still broken <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

Get it booked in a garage.
  118. #118
If only it was that easy, dont trust many garages round my way nothing but trouble and issues in the past, they also dont see it as a rare old vts, just as a shitroen scrapso theyve not worked on in a long time, that you cant pull codes from as it doesnt have obd2...would cost a fortune and no ones interested in touching it<br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

No EML on? Do you have Lexia by any chance? Struggling to think of anything else tbh. Does it do it when the engine is still cold or just once heated up? Does the car drive normally aside from this (is it just an issue of cutting out when returning to idle) ? Did you clean the port that the IACV sits in? Also did you replace the IACV with a new one or a 2nd hand one?

EDIT: another thought, have you checked out your fuel pressure regulator? There should be a vacuum line goes to it, under vacuum (i.e. idle and light throttle) the vac 'helps' the diaphragm to move thus reduces pressure under these conditions, when you floor it the vacuum collapses and the pressure is higher as it is no longer helping to move the diaphragm. Could check that you have vac there (pop the pipe off and check for vac at the end of it during idle).

No eml light on bud, whats lexia bud? Ive taken off my fuel pressure reg checked the pipe feels fine not brittle at all seems strong though, ordered a fuel pressure reg in for tomorrow will give it a crack before shipping it off to my mates thanks!<br><br>Have to say its a good looking garden ornament <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

Hi, lexia is the citroen diagnostic kit. You can buy it online (it's a clone of course). Very useful for diagnosing issues.

I am just wondering if it could be the speed sensor from the gearbox. I think I have seen people describe similar issues when that fails, tells the ECU about road speed. I think however that would also give you issues with your speed readout. You could always try just unplugging it to see what effect it has. It is above the driveshaft output on the gearbox (think it sits on the drivers side).

Does it do it cold / hot / both? Have you tried unplugging the O2 sensor? Could it be the power feed to the O2 sensor heater maybe?

    Must be very frustrating.
  123. #123
Oh i see will look into that lexia, we tried plugging my mates laptop into it hes got delphi software and it kept saying it couldnt connect with it for some reason, the car does it fron hot or cold now, ive replaced the o2 sensor and had a quick rummage to see if i could find any broken wires and didnt soo far, ill check that speed sensor cheers<br><br>Gunna drop it at my mates workshop before i set it a light today <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

Hello mate , glad you've kept at it , mine went tits up two years back blown head gasket and just generally tired , I dragged it along with me all these years driving my girlfriend up the wall in it ! lol . last time I drove it her friend came down in her merc slk 55 amg they had a drink so I picked them up in the saxo , it scared her ! lol
  125. #125
Yeh me too in a way, just sods law summers coming up and now it chooses to not work , haha yeh theyre nippy for what they are and could fall apart at any second so im not surprised hahaha scared a fair few people in the trusty steeds

Soo after much fucking about, i sent it off to a buddy he found out when pulling the wires back on this plug that they just fell out from brittleness....you would think boom problem solved...fixed, nope ...it was better and he found out without the icv plugged in it now wouldnt cut out, soo we put the old icv and programmed it turning the key on and off winding it in etc, adjusting the air screw on the throttle body.....and finally she works again about time!<br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>
  127. #127
Great to hear all is well again. What plug was it then?
  128. #128
Air temp i believe bud, i think it was mainly the icv valve not being correctly set could of saved me a few pennies but hey ho least i know all the other bits are done <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

So now its working i again i remembered how sloppy the steering felt when cornering hard...the coilovers made a world of difference along with the anti roll bar poly's but still too wobbly side to side...so a front end refresh is being done.
    New ball joints
New front and rear arm polybushes
New driveshafts mine look old and skanky
    New track rod ends

Fingers crossed gets rid of the sloppyness unless its the soft walled uniroyal tyres

Ive also got a cambelt and waterpump kit on the way plus new gearbox oil again...definitely not a fan of 75w80 way to thin for one of these ...so going to chuck in some 75w90 fully synthetic should be alot better!
  130. #130
    Does look sweet this thing.
Let me know when you're selling it!
  131. #131
Thanks mate! Hopefully wont be for a while when ive finished it for abit , just needs paint really but i kinda dont want to paint it cos then ill threat about chips scratches swirls etc at the mo i dont care <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>
  132. #132
Gearbox oil, aux belt and cambelt waterpump turned up today so should be done in a couple days ready for me to actually drive the thing, only done 700 miles in the year ive owned it <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>
  133. #133
glad you got it sorted mate . mines a pain in the arse , had to drill out the fuel rail bolts to head , can't seem to find these ones anywhere on line , want it sorted before end of year to get it mot'd for the road again
  134. #134
The MA boxes really like their intended oil, I wouldnt use somrthing different. If your box has a problem then its not oil related if you have 75w80 in it
  135. #135
Ahh really nutty saxo thats annoying i feel for you! Just remember itll be worth it in the end! Yeh mines the original box it came with so i suspect its worn with age, it whines abit in 3rd as well, will eventually get it rebuilt as i was told the other day citroen still do the bits and theyre pretty cheap! Ive put some synthetic oil in it so that its a bit nicer and less notchy from cold seems to of worked pretty well! Got it back last night had a quick blast but been raining....everything ive had done it feels like a totally different car im so pleased with it..ill clean it up at the weekend and put some pics up
  136. #136
Excuse the rusty arms , but its now had the bits done and ive given it as best a wash as i can underneath on my drive, so new driveshafts balljoints and polybushes underneath <br><br>Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk<br><br>

Get those powerflex rear bush brackets so far to fuck, or take them off and weld gussets on. Theyre hopelessly designed and have strength in one plane only.

That's interesting,I have the same, purple not black bushes though, but the car hasn't seen the road yet,to be honest they don't look much at all but then again it's not that easy to weld reinforcements on the original bracket itself without blocking access to the bolt, maybe weld a triangle shape reinforcement on each side? Will take a look next time I work on the car.

Not if you use allen head bolts

However a socket should still fit in there.

You might want to add some reinforcement to the lower arms as I've read people bending them with brakes such as Brembos lol, also seeing as you have the Powerflex black,I've done it on mine but car still off road so don't have any feedback yet.

This is what I did to mine anyway, welded 3mm plates (thickest one I had on hand) on each side and also added some welds on the inside not shown in the pictures, hopefully that prevents whatever the new powerflex design was made for.
Also I have threaded the hole they left at the top for some grease nipple I don't see any other use for it? Unless for the excess grease to come out during installation.

That's how powerflex should have made them in the first place.

What idiot at powerflex thought it would be acceptable to send out the original folded metal shite.
