Coupe of silly questions - air filter and turbo

   First of all, sorry! I know jack bollocks about engines etc... its something i would like to learn about, so i'll start with a nooob question or 2..
   
   Air filter, i always see adverts like: "standard apart from k&n air filter"
   
   What exactly does an air filter do to the car and performance/noise wise??
   
   
   While im asking annoying things if anyone could give me a quick basic run down on a turbo that would be great, i am always reading , (x)psi this, and boost this etc etc and would like to know what it means.

   Open filters are suppose to help the engine breathe better, the open ones however tend to duffer from heat-soak (they suck the hot air from insided the engine bay into the engine, as we all know, cold air is denser and thus there is more oxygen in it meaning a larger amount of fuel can be mixed with it and a bigger bang created)
   
   Turbos create pressure on the air being pushed into the engine, the strength of the preasure is measured in psi (pounds per square inch iirc) or Bars. Again, more pressure means more oxygen means more bang.
   
   Bit vauge i know, its a start, now though, its bedtime

   Cheers! i remember years back my mate got an air filter and it made his car sound louder? is that something they do or did he just fit it wrong lol?

   Forget to mention that, open filters tend to be quite loud when u put your foot down, known as the 'induction roar'
   
   Enclosed filteres are not as loud (but can offer better perforamce) and panel filters are the same as the standard system!

   Its late and im tired, but here's a quick run down on how a turbo works mate!
   
   Air entering the engine first passes through an exhaust driven compressor. Compressed air results in a larger quantity of air being forced into the engine, creating more power.
   The energy used to drive the turbo compressor is extracted from waste exhaust gasses. As exhaust gasses leave the engine they are directed through a wheel placed in the exhaust flow. The gasses drive the turbine wheel around, which is directly connected via a shaft, to the compressor wheel.
   Increased exhaust gas drives the turbine wheel faster, this provides the engine more air, producing more power. A limit is met once a pre-determined boost pressure is achieved. At this point the exhaust gas is redirected away from the turbine wheel, thus slowing it down and limiting the maximum boost pressure. This redirection valve is known as the wastegate. This extraction of energy, from exhaust gas, to improve engine efficiency is the device known as the turbocharger.
   Turbochargers are usually seen as power enhancements on performance cars, but today, turbochargers are becoming more regularly used to provide greater torque on small capacity engines. The advantages of using a turbo engine include improved fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions.
   
   hope you appreciate this as im very tired and that tokk me along time to do, i can't be arsed with the induction kit thing, someone else can do that lol

    also if i can add... notice that the exhaust gases are right next to the flow of the air in.
    
    the hot gases makes the turbo heat up and the turbo spins bloody quick which also aids heat... so the incoming air will increase in heat slightly... not good.
    
    Therefore it should really be doubled up with an intercooler :Y:

    This reminds me of a similar thread about manifolds Think that one became a sticky in the engines section.

    It's good to see that your all helping eachother out here, really brings the community together so good work everyone. This is a topic which is commonly asked on the site so i am going to pop it as a sticky for a while. Thats a really good find s34mer and to the rest of you too im sure your advice is much appreciated

    hi im new to this forum so ive got to catch up !! ive got a saxo 1.4 furio i wanna put a turbo on it, but how much is it going to cost me ?? and wil it make a noticeable difference ??

    e a new thread bud , and theres a person on here called sophia_bush and i think if i remember correctly they turbo'ed a 1.4 106 quicksilver and did it for under £1500 (dont quote me on that) and they got around 160bhp i think . its good if you want to be different and have a turbo 1.4 but if your wanting more power why not get a vts/gti 1.6 16valve engine and turbo that as to get the same 160bhp that the 1.4 engine would give you , on the 1.6 16 valve engine it would be easy theres a few people who have seen 400bhp plus but this is with £20k plus trown at the engine

    Save your money get a vts then decide if you want the extra power
