I put a pipercross air filter on my vtr yesterday, and when its stud stationary but still on tick over i can smell petrol fumes coming thru the air vents,is it anything to b worried about or is it normal when youv put a performace filter on?

#2thats not normal im sure of it... ive never had that problem so it cant be a good thing.
Have your engine ticking over and see if you can see any petrol spilling out in the engine bay or dripping onto the floor underneth the car?
u might have knocked something when installing the filter

#3^^^
Good advice, check the area around where the OE airbox setup was and see if there are any pipes that you may have knocked.
Foam filters are oiled to help filtration which cotton filters which may give a slight smell but check for puddles and other leaks -
#4read my thread HERE as this happened to me, and i know its happened to others too!!
but its most likely a split fuel pipe, may only be a very small tear in the piping! but its quite common on french cars! mine was that the jubilee clips on the fuel pipe, under the wipers in the engine bay, had bitten into the rubber and caused a small tear!
whatever you do DON'T DRIVE IT till you've checked its deffo not a fuel leak!!! -
#5Some times when fitting open induction kits, on idle that do smell abit though!
-
#7Because of the extra air flow supplied by an open filter the car normally has to increase the fueling and can run alittle rich - thats we had to do on carbs years ago so I asume the ecu does the same but Id still check the pipes to be on the safe side
-
#8I have that smell sometimes mate! Nothing to be worried about!
-
#9hi ive just been outside to av alook under the bonnet, ther was no wet patches (petrol)around the air filter and ther was nothing on the floor, the car is worm and i cant smell it now, when i smelt it the car ad'nt wormed up proply,do u think that mite av sumthing to do with it?
-
#10yeah, i think you'll be ok, just rev the engine while the bonnet's up and check theres no petrol leaking when the throttle is appied!
-
#11i pulled the throttle and i cudnt see nothing, but b4 the air filter was on i ad no probs cud'nt smell nothing ,its only now with the piper cross that i can,but its mostly ther wen the car is cold!
-
#12im pretty sure it'll be fine then mate. because the open filter is on, it will run slightly richer anyway, so you may get a slight smell of fuel!
-
#13sounds a bit worrying, perhaps light a match in your engine bay, see what happens. if you and your car dont go up in flames....Jobs a good un
-
#14just keep an eye out if the smell carrys on. but just could be that your running rich from the filter.
-
#15NO don't do that!!!!Quote:sounds a bit worrying, perhaps light a match in your engine bay, see what happens. if you and your car dont go up in flames....Jobs a good un

Soulless be careful what you tell people, there are some real dumb shits out there that would actually do that lol!
-
#16lol, i wouldnt do that,im not that mad!!!!!!!!!!
-
#18have you got a oil breather filter on it now then as these sometimes smell
mine did it now and again
if you cant see no petrol leeks and have 1 of these breather filters id say its that -
#19have you connected the pipe from the oil breather?? if not put a filter in it to stop the smell or put a pipe going to you pipercross...
simple.
i wouldnt have thought putting a filter on would split you fuel lines lol
