How to guide: Changing Fuel Filter

  1. #1
had a look around and could'nt find a guide for how to change the fuel filter so heres my guide.

    Things you need:-
    - new fuel filter
    - new fuel filter strap (chances are that your old one will break)
    - trolley jack
    - rubber gloves (petrol stings if it gets in any cuts in your hands)
    - small bucket
-axel stands (to be extra safe)

the fuel filter is located on the passenger side of the car just in front of the back wheel

    1. jack the car up and put it on axel stands if you want to be extra safe, i live my life to the egde so didnt bother with the stands (plus i trust the jack). i jacked the car up under the front jacking point as the one on the rear is right next to the fuel filter

    2. when you have jacked the car up this is what you need to look for

    3. pull the strap like this. it should just pop out. it doesnt matter if this breaks as you have a new one standing by

    4. i didnt know i which order to unplug the hoses so just went for it and did this one first, get your bucket ready

as soon as i took this hose of petrol started to come out

just put my finger over it, keep it level and no petrol comes out

    5. now take the other hose off

    6. your filter should now come out and just plug your new one back in

this is what your new filter and strap should look like

    7. as your old strap might break (99.9% chance it will) this needs to be replaced.

this is the hardest part of it. the knob that is on the end of the strap that hasnt got the small handle on it has to be pushed into a hole which is up and round to the left hand side of the fuel filter. this was quite hard to get in as the brake pipes were in my way. the hole is white and easy to find with your fingers.

    8. this is what it should now look like.

Please make sure that when you put the pipes back on to the new fuel filter they click into place

    10. once this is all done and you have checked your work, start your car and give is a couple of revs

Everything time I have changed the fuel filter, I have had to do this a few times before I could hear that the system is fully ready for ignition.

    11. check for any leaks, which there shouldnt be

    12. off you go

Nice one mate, need to do a service to mine in the near future so this ill come in handy!

Couple of typos though, you called it an oil filter once and wrote 'not' instead of 'now'
  3. #3
    look again, lol
  4. #4
    Sticky??
  5. #5
Great guide! Will give this ago sometime in the next couple of weeks...!
    Should defo's be stickied too..
  6. #6

thats one of the best jacks you can get, it can hold 3 tonne. Cheers though
  10. #10
yeah but if it fails your a bit fooked mate, axle stands are much safer working under a car
  11. #11
    first posted edited
  12. #12
lol go on make me look a dick you must be a real man getting uder a car with it just on the jack
  13. #13
well i was just going to hold it with one arm but didnt want to make anyone blush lol
  14. #14
    lol
  15. #15
i do it with just a jack not fussed tbh
  16. #16
not fussed if it falls on your head or falls and causes serious damage to the car. Ok then
  17. #17
lol my car has slipped off the jack before, its so easy to do, if your working uder a car with just the jack in place and you start undoing a bolt the jack could easily fail or slip, for the sake of an extra 2 minutes put it on stands, could save your life

hence why i have changed it to say use axel stands if you wise

Good guide this, just thought id say though the blue clip citroen dont seem to list.

Ive got a 1.4 2000 reg saxo, the blown up diagram for my saxo at least showed the filter being held on by a cable tie. So they dont supply the blue clip part, even though ive got one fitted
  26. #26
    nice guide m8

Always a good idea to do this to check that youve connected it properly, instead of runing the engine straight away and pissing out tons of fuel

Oil filters and oild should just be changed over at the same time...

Oil is changed by getting under the car and undoing the sump plug and draining the oil, before re-fitting and tightening then re-filling with 4 litres of
5w-40 engine Oil (Silkolene Pro 5w-40 is the best but you choose)

    Filter just screws on
  37. #37
Great guide Mark, be using this very soon

    More guides are a must
  38. #38
Oil filter screws on, just do it hand tight dont use tools or you wont be getting it off again.

Also, petrol stings like fuck when it drips on your face

haha. Id already made many trips to halfords, forgot to get a sump kep the first time, and a spark plug socket the next. So i couldnt be bothered to get some hose clamps, thought what was the worse that could happen.

It hits your skin and its well cold, then all of a sudden it starts eating your face and you end up runnign around like a madman slapping youself in the face.

no mate it does not, you need to get that seperately
  54. #54
Great guide didnt recall you mentioned the direction of flow on the filter? they can only be fit one way so take note when removing/re-fitting
  55. #55
never trust a one of those jacks, i was lucky in collage as one just droped as i was getting out from under a car!
  56. #56

Good luck trying to get the new clip on, i gave up and used some cable ties instead!!
  58. #58
great guide only thing i have left to do, well that and sparkies but i think theres a guide for that aswell.
    muchus gracias
  59. #59
Thanks for this. Used it a few weeks ago.

Take the plastic covers from the new filter and stick them on the old filter as soon as you take the pipe(s) off. Easier than trying to stop the flow with a finger and frees up a hand.

10/10 for effort taking pictures whilst doing this
  60. #60

you gotta push the metal clip in near the rear wheel with something, screwdriver will do, then pull it out at the same time, then the other clip you have to sqeeze together then pull it off, clamp the lines first unless u dont mind getting petrol everywhere
  63. #63
thanks mate ill give it another try today..also cant seem to get a new strap anywere were are people getting them from now ??
  64. #64
i need to change the filter on mine, managed to get a strap from citroen dealer only cost £1.36, if not citroen then try peugeot as 106/306 may well have same mounting system.
  65. #65
Bit off topic but the oil should be 3.5 litres not 4 litres, its the same on all models, read your handbook
  66. #66
just a quick question, i went and bought a new fuel filter from GSF, and i didnt get the fuel filter strap with it, i asked the guy on the counter and he didnt have a clue, he said that it shudnt need one...when i pressed him and said it was in my haynes manual he said it was probably a part only available from a dealer?? Does anyone know if this is true or not? Mines a 1.1 x mk 1, so is it different to the mark 2 and do i need/not need the strap? Iv tried looking underneath the car but the idiot i am i cant find where its located...

    cheers
  67. #67

  84. #84
    Great guide very useful
  85. #85
    Brilliant Guide I must say.

Them clips are to get off the filter.

Also no need to jack up the car I did it with it on the ground easy enough to get to and saved lots of time.

Car slipped of the jack on me just after christmas, black eye and a couple cracked ribs, +1 with the stands!

I herd that removing the fuse to the fuel pump and then switching the ignition on will clear the petrol out of the filter and hoses and the pump wont let anymore petrol in and this will stop fuel coming out of the filter then you take it out ... has anyone tried this?
  88. #88
    great guide!

Thanks for this great post i will be doin mine tomoz

Just thought i would share what came out my old filter today...isnt it supposed to be clean car runs so much better now, put some redex through too as had massive prower loss before, I even thought the engine was shot before i changed the fuel filter

  92. #92
i want change the fuel filter, but before i want ask a question; when i remove completely the filter, the petrol continues to go out or comes out just a little bit?
  93. #93
    Hi,

I'm sorry to come on here as a newbie and ask for help straight away, but we have just done a major service on my daughters 03 plate saxo desire. I doing this we changed the fuel filter, and needless to say the old strap broke.

I have managed to get a new one from Citroen (had to buy 4 to get 1!!), but my question is, do you have to drop the tank on that side to get the upper part of the strap in?.

We have tried for 20 minutes to feed it in, but I just cant get my big sausage fingers in to press it into the tank. Is there a particular trick to this or is it the pain it looks?.

At the moment, I have temporaily cable tied it up to the brake lines, but I don't like the idea of this as a longlasting repair in case it chafes through the brake line.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Phil
