im not an expert mate but imo i would start by clening the icv and if its not working then buy a new one......failing that take it to a garage and ask there opinion, then just start with the cheapest working up...

just hope its not one of those problems where u end up nearly changing everything to find out the problem
  12. #12
Mine and my two mates cars do this sometimes but not very often.

just found this on the web hope it helps!!

Screwdriver - remove the 90 degree flexi-bend from the air filter to the throttle body.

Allen Key - remove the 3 allen key bolts holding the throttle body to the intake plenum chamber.

Plugs - remove the throttle body heater plug, IAC Stepper plug, Air intake temp sensir plug and throttle position plug.

    Pull off the throttle body.

Remove the Stepper Motor (ICV)with 2 x Torx bits.

Now, use an entire can of brake cleaner or wd-40, a roll of kitchen roll, and various cloths, tooth-brushes and whatever else you need to make it absolutely spotless and shiney in there.

Let me know how you get on!!

Allen Key - remove the 3 allen key bolts holding the throttle body to the intake plenum chamber.

now stuck is it the black box thing ( how do i do that mate ? ) do i take all pipes n leads out ?

The only lead you need to take off is the one to the ICV. Unclip the wiring harness, then remove the ICV, no real need to disturb anything else.

Also I'd be careful spraying carb cleaner around the throttle body too much, I'm not 100% sure what you'll end up nuking if you get it in the wrong place (lots of sensors in that area).

The ICV is the small barrel shaped unit on the far side of the throttle housing at the top - if you imagine it in place when fitted to the car. It is held in by two torx bolts. Undo these and recover the unit. When you remove it should look like the one posted in the ebay link above.

The problem you'll have is that if cleaning the ICV doesn't work, that doesn't necessarily mean the problem is not your ICV... if you catch my drift.

In short it doesn't matter how much you clean a dead ICV. If its dead... its dead.

Cleaning it is however good advice because it may be just bunged up. Personally I reckon it'll need replacing.

If I was you I'd get on the blower to a local scrappy or look on here for a used cheap ICV and MAP sensor. Replace them both and you'll probably be sorted.

Coolent temp sensor is next after the above.

Hope that kinda helps Don't just ditch the car because you have this problem, its worth fixing.

It looks like the image below and if you can remove the throttle body with the three bolts then you are almost there.

The ICV should be screwed into the throttle body.

Maybe somebody with a phase 1 vtr can confirm this because I don't have that engine in front of me.
