Ball Joint

Hi, I have an advisory on my saxo of a new ball joint, looked on ebay and can get two new ball joints for £13 ish.
Just wondering how much should i be willing to pay for a garage to put them on or can anyone on here round the birmingham area do it for me?
    Cheers nath

    You could do it yourself.

bash old one out with hammer

    take rubber off new one

bash new one in from below - use heat if stiff

    put rubber back on

Id say no more than £20 at garage

Beware when you try and replace them though. If they've been in there for so long they can make the hole for the ball joint bigger by ripping the splines out. Then the ball joint will just sit in and rattle aroundor fall out lol.

cheers for the quick replys, you reckon £20 for both?
Tbf i might give it a go myself, if the hole does become big how can you fix that? cheers

Unless you have a vice and access to heat (blow torch etc) then garage would be easier. maybe more than £20 for both.

If you want the garage to take your car apart to get to the wishbone then expect to be charged more

£20 if you take to them the new parts and the wishbones (separate from car)

dont need too, but if you get a new lower arm it will come complete with a balljoint in it.

It isnt that hard getting them out, heat should of helped but didnt for me, 1 was ok and the other was too big. Just give it a go

tbf, just take your arms, with the new ball joints to a garage and offer them £20 to press them out and in, or a crate of beer or something...

95% of mechanics would be a fool to turn it down.

As above go to a garage and get them pressed out its the only SAFE way to do it. Shouldn't cost more than a tenner and thats if the garage are really busy, I got mine done last week and they done it for free as they had nothing on when i popped in.

But as long as the offer is there for them to turn down.

Failing that, you can pick up a set of decent second hand bottom arms off here/ebay, sometimes with polybushes already in for about 40-£50, then just fit them yourself, anyone with a bit of common sense can do it. I've even written a guide on changing them on here

cheers for all the replies ill give it a go then, so you think its better to get a new lower arm or what? thanks
  16. #16
thanks for the guide of the wishbone ill replace that when the weather is better
  17. #17
well i found it better becuase i couldnt find any garages who would press in some ball joints at a good price, as they were too scared they'll not do it first time and keep going through ball joints lol. Also i got told its not a bad idea to replace the wishbones as they bend slightly over years of knocking them off curbs etc. not sure how true this is...

A mech would generally charge £120 in london area

go on ebay, theres loads of wishbones for saxos/106s for under 30 (brand new too)

A garage should really not charge more than £20 to push one ball joint and replace(x2)
(if you take your wishbones in)
if you buy new wishbones as above they will come complete. so all you need to do its undo 4 bolts each side(not including wheel nuts)
and put new bone in place and tighten up
