  1. #1
i am doing some work on a 16v j4 head.

i wish to renew the valve stem seals. i have attempted to remove them from the guides but can only tare small bits off and cannot get them off fully.

i have used the search button and google but cant find anything for saxo 16v head.

is there a special tool i need?

Just try grab the seals by the metal bit with some pliers, try getting a nice tight grip and twist them off

As above, Once you've got the nack of getting one of them off they're really easy lol. I was the same when i first did mine.

They can be tight buggers, i think in the end i got a small blade and carefully put a slit along the side and they just fell off.

There is a metal spring ring which normally just pulls off leaving the majority of the rubber seal on there

Dont grab the metal bit as thats the valve guide and you cant pull it off, it'll just get torn up and wont help the new stem seals sit right and seal

I've not removed any vts ones, so your more then welcome to wait fr other ppls opinion

There is a metal jacket round the seal, under the spring you can see

Just grab the metal jacket with some pliers and wiggle/twist them off

I just used a set of large plyers and pulled them off. They are almost impossible to remove them without destroying them, but you can get them off in one piece. Getting the new ones on square and without damaging them can also be tricky.

I just used needle nose pliers or a magnet to remove them, they where quite loose on mine, piece of cake to do

It's putting them back in that pisses me off.. They're always dead sharp on the edge aswel lol

10mm socket on an extension bar fits perfect onto the 16v ones can just push them on.

    right lads....

i couldnt find a guide or any pictures for doing these so i took plenty...

this is how i used them. you could call this a guide for removing 16v stem seals ?

start off here with the head removed from the car. take a look at the old stem seals in place. as you can see the head is deep....

next move is to reach inside with some pliars

i found it hard to get a good grip as they kept slipping so i made a groove on the teeth of the grips for extra grip...

reaching back down to the seals i wiggled them in all directions before commiting with a good grip and pulled them out.

lift the old seal out. after 74,000 miles mine were hard and not supple any more.

view of one seals removed and one in situ.

then repeat until all seals are removed.

i will continue with a fitting of new seals once i have finished with the head (p&p).
